The bigger problem is the toxic posture of administrators, teachers, school boards, and donors who prioritize identity politics and institutional self-regard over critical thinking and self-sufficiency, then dismiss one of the best thought partners we’ve had to date.
If you can’t laugh at the position universities willingly put themselves in, you’re probably part of the group society is laughing at: all the hubris and unearned righteousness. People know real value is created by people doing the work, building things, and moving markets, not credential gatekeepers. A degree does not make someone objectively better, and an expensive piece of paper bought with family money is increasingly a bad trade once you look at the earnings delta and lost time.
It’s fine to say college has become a lemming factory that gives students a brutally distorted entry into a real world that does not reward performative values. The real world rewards outcomes.
Restricting tools will not fix that. It compounds it. Typical academia mindset: insisting on being a Luddite with rigor, and clinging to tradition to protect a status quo that is already sinking.
I'm personally thankful for the lens LLMs are holding up to these institutions refusal to understand their role, the market, and what makes for better citizens and people that can grow themselves and their communities.
