Yes, it feels like this yawning chasm between what you and I read in Al Jazeera and what the tech crowd here seems to acknowledge.

The same is historically true here of climate change and the erosion of democracy, although somewhat better (and more humble) on these points of late. The layoffs probably helped break the spell.

It's a very lumpy, burgeoning, youthful sort of intelligence that doesn't worry about the preconditions of its contemplative habitat, but for better or worse, that's us, baby.

I try to generate compassion around this. Everyone is busy and mostly with business they chose under economic coercion. But yes, it's an enormous blind spot, and it falls on you and me and others like us to keep gently pointing it out.

It's unsatisfying labour, but it's a useful contribution, I figure.

As the old saying goes, despite the inference that we will not see its completion, we are not free to abandon it.

It's always worth talking to folks because there is always a chance they will listen :)

How are you getting ready for the next few Hormuz-inflected years?

I am patting my fuel-thrifty subcompact car affectionately on its little hood, and laying in a month or two's worth of lentils and rice, and filling up my chest freezer with Costco meat. Covid taught me this path
