It took off in at least one place that I'm aware of: Hong Kong. I knew people from there who had minidisc players and when I visited there in the nineties there were whole shops full of them.
I never bought one myself but they reminded me a bit of sturdier floppy discs. They seemed to combine features of the CD along with the cassette since they had a hard casing.
